Giants and Mountains – What Intimidates Others Is What You’re Called to Possess

REFLECTION:
You’ve come to the Valley of Decision, the space between promise and possession. Numbers 13 reveals a generation who saw the same land but responded with two different spirits. What separated Caleb and Joshua from the other ten was not the size of the giants but the depth of their covenant. Before the giants were visible, another spirit was already at work: fear, doubt, and self-sabotage. These were the real enemies.
THE SPIRIT BEFORE THE GIANTS – A MAP OF REBELLION AND REDEMPTION
1. Doubt took root: fear distorted what they saw.
2. False reports were released: lies wrapped in facts.
3. Negative declarations followed: “We are not able…”
4. Spiritual mutiny emerged: “Let us appoint a new leader…”
5. Rebellion fully manifested: they rejected God’s voice and servant.
In contrast, Moses and Aaron interceded. Caleb and Joshua tried to restore faith. And God laid out very specific reasons why that generation would not enter in: they despised Him, they tested Him repeatedly, they spread doubt, and they rebelled.
PLACES THAT EXPOSE THE HEART: PARAN & ESHCOL
Paran was not the mountain of encounter, it was the wilderness of decision. The place where Israel had to choose whether to live by what they saw, or by what God said. Eshcol was meant to be the place of fruit-bearing and evidence, but it became the backdrop of doubt. What should have been a cluster of hope became a trigger for retreat.
THE 12 SPIES – NAMES, FATHERS, AND PROPHETIC DESTINY
Here is a breakdown of the 12 spies, their tribes, their fathers’ names, and the prophetic contrast between their identity and their response:
1. Shammua (Reuben) – Son of Zaccur | “Heard” from “Remembered” – but forgot covenant.
2. Shaphat (Simeon) – Son of Hori | “Judge” from “Noble/Caves” – failed to judge rightly.
3. Caleb (Judah) – Son of Jephunneh | “Wholehearted” from “He will be prepared” – walked in full obedience.
4. Igal (Issachar) – Son of Joseph | “He redeems” from “Increases” – but chose retreat.
5. Hoshea/Joshua (Ephraim) – Son of Nun | “Salvation” from “Perpetuity” – fulfilled the call.
6. Palti (Benjamin) – Son of Raphu | “Deliverance” from “Healed” – but withdrew.
7. Gaddiel (Zebulun) – Son of Sodi | “God is my fortune” from “Confidant” – chose scarcity.
8. Gaddi (Manasseh) – Son of Susi | “My fortune” from “Horse-like” – lacked perseverance.
9. Ammiel (Dan) – Son of Gemalli | “My kinsman is God” from “Camel-driver” – disbelieved identity.
10. Sethur (Asher) – Son of Michael | “Hidden” from “Who is like God” – stayed concealed.
11. Nahbi (Naphtali) – Son of Vophsi | “Hidden” from “My addition” – feared advancement.
12. Geuel (Gad) – Son of Machi | “Majesty of God” from “Diminished” – abandoned legacy.
Only Caleb and Joshua aligned with their true name and legacy.
Only two men lived up to their prophetic identity. The rest had names that spoke of promise, but they aligned themselves with fear. They had fathers of nobility and preparation, but chose rebellion and regression.
This is a sober reminder:
calling does not guarantee conquest, obedience does.
THE GIANTS BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS
Each of the seven nations in Canaan represents a spiritual stronghold still in operation today. These are not just ancient tribes, they are modern systems that oppose reformers and builders.
Hittites – Fear & Terror → Media
Girgashites – Carnality & Unbelief → Education
Amorites – Pride & Mockery → Government
Canaanites – Compromise & Mammon → Economy
Perizzites – Smallness & Insecurity → Family
Hivites – Mixture & Deception → Religion
Jebusites – Rejection & Oppression → Arts & Entertainment
HOW GOD DEFEATED THE GIANTS – STRATEGIC PATTERNS
Each nation required a different strategy:
- Jericho fell by silence, alignment, and sound.
- The Amorites fell by hailstones and the sun standing still.
- The Jebusites fell under David’s apostolic authority.
- The Hivites exposed a weakness in Israel’s prayer life, they didn’t inquire.
Some giants fall by worship. Others by wisdom. Others by prophetic decree. Each system requires spiritual intelligence.
PRAYER POINTS:
Break every agreement with doubt, fear, and false declarations.
Ask God to reveal any area where rebellion, dishonor, or small thinking has delayed your promise.
Intercede for clarity about your assigned mountain.
Declare your readiness to confront the giants at the gate.
Pray for the endurance of Caleb, the authority of Joshua, and the purity of spirit that walks in covenant.
PROPHETIC DECLARATION:
I declare I will not fear what I see, I believe what God has said.
I break agreement with every false report and curse of inferiority.
I am not a grasshopper, I am a daughter of dominion.
I do not run from the mountain. I ascend.
I am one with the Caleb company, wholehearted and different.
I will inherit what was promised. Giants are bread, and mountains are mine.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
With love, hope, and faith,
Bukola Olumofin.
